DUCKS …..A Message from VOV President
“On Tuesday July 9th I was relaxing on my patio and counted more than 50 Mallard Ducks on the banks of Pond 2. It was more ducks than I had seen since I moved to the Villages of Vilano. It made me think that perhaps we should augment the new 15 mph Speed Limit signs with some friendly signs – “Slow, Duck Crossing” with a colorful picture of a Mallard. Unfortunately, on rainy Wednesday night, July 10th a Mallard Duck was run over and killed on Village Drive. I was called and went out to retrieve the duck but someone had already disposed of the carcass. During the July 15th Wine and Cheese social at the clubhouse it was interrupted by another report of duck being run over on Village Drive. This time I shoveled the carcass into a garbage bag and deposited it in the dumpster. Fellow residents, we have a problem!
Please obey the 15 mph Speed Limit signs and watch out for children, pets and ducks. Be prepared to STOP! And if you are feeding the ducks, please stop now because it is attracting more and more ducks to our ponds. Ducks are not pets, they are wild birds and are able to find their own food. The more ducks the more duck crossings, the more potential accidents. Perhaps the Board will approve my idea of installing friendly – “Slow, Duck Crossing” signs to help with this problem, but we need everyone’s cooperation.”
